West Souris River Conservation District (WSRCD) held its field tour, Wednesday, August 10 – which marked the first one in many years.

The tour started off at the WSRCD office in Reston. Everyone who attended the tour loaded onto the Virden Auto Body bus which was driven by WSRCD Manager, Dean Brooker.

In attendance were representatives from Manitoba Conservation District Association along with a few landowners that were involved in projects being viewed at the tour and discussed throughout the day.

The first stop on the journey was an hour-long tour of Westwood Ranch, given by owner Mark Humphries. The very funny Humphries explained the different animals and showed the process of the Greenhouse.

The next stop before lunch was the water retention project – Assiniboine River water quality fund at Kathy and David Huston’s.

After a wonderful morning of touring, lunch was provided for the group at Cherry Point Park.

The afternoon proved to be full of different projects – covering six different projects and sites – Shelterbelt project, Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation/Critical Wildlife Presentation, and Growing Forward 2 Project Winter-Watering, were the first few stops right after lunch.

Later in the afternoon, the tour stopped at the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program site – Cassidy Howell explained how they protect and feed the owls; Broomhill Dog Tainers – the group was able to walk around the farm yard and see all the dogs; and the last stop of the day was to the Tilston Orchard. The orchard still had apples on the trees and the group enjoyed an apple or two to end the wonderful tour.

Brooker said, “[The tour] went well, there were lots of compliments from the participants... We hope to make this a yearly event”
