Elkhorn Elks celebrate the season

This is the time of the year when many of our area community service clubs hold a Christmas party for their members. That is what happened recently in Elkhorn as the Elkhorn Elks Club No.

This is the time of the year when many of our area community service clubs hold a Christmas party for their members. That is what happened recently in Elkhorn as the Elkhorn Elks Club No.381 combined its members Christmas party with a regular meeting.

The evening was held at the Elks’ Hall with a happy hour followed by a buffet supper prepared by the Virden Boston Pizza franchise. Before the meal, grace was given by member Wanda Rhodes. The event had a good turn out with members being invited from Moosomin and other area Elk Clubs.

Following supper, the club meeting was opened with its rituals and ceremonies. The meeting was chaired by Branch Leader Kevin Tutthill.  As usual, the meeting concerned itself with a number of proposals and requests that the club would help to promote the development of the community and the overall quality of life of its residents.

The Elks and the Royal Canadian Legion have done much over the years to make the village a good place to live and work in. A highlight of the meeting was the awarding of long term service pins to several members present that evening, however a 50-year service pin will be awarded later to Syde Parson, who could not make the evening.

Additional pins were given to a number of new members of the club, as the Elks and the Legion have been active in trying to recruit younger members.

With the business of the meeting attended to, it was back to the Christmas party events, which would turn out to be a very funny thirty minutes of a Christmas gift exchange game. There were also door prizes and draws; selection of the best Christmas costume went to a club member dressed up as an older Jesus Christ complete with long hair, beard and flowing white robe.

Gift exchange

After each person was given a gift from under the Christmas tree, they were not allowed to open it. A die was rolled to see the fate of your gift - whether it should be opened or exchanged with another or snatched by someone else at the table.

When the final gift was opened there was time for fellowship and a great selection of cheese cakes and beverages. Three special people on hand that evening were three generations of the same family that are active members of the club. They would be Jim Shackel, his son Ken, and Jim’s grandson Mackenzie. This group is also known as the “master popcorn makers”.

Said Kevin Tutthill, “We are such a lucky group. We have 54 members now that range in age from 17 to 90 plus, males and females and for 99 percent of the time we get along together famously. Tonight we gave out year pins to members from our very brand new members to a 50-year member and almost every year in between. As a group we work hard and we play hard, and we always try to have a little left over for Elkhorn and area!

"Thank you to the entire community that supports all we do, we truly appreciate the support of Elkhorn and surrounding area. May you all have a safe and happy Christmas and the best in the New Year.”
