Tuesday evening, May 16, in the Lions Hall, 18 Lions Club members assembled to donate cheques to 21 groups in Virden and area. Lions Club members, 34 last count, made possible a financial contribution of $63,500 to community groups ranging from minor sports, the fire department, to Christmas Cheer and animal rescues.

Virden Lions Club helps community life in a variety of ways. These members contribute to projects that bring in the thousands of dollars that the club donates to organizations and to individuals who may suddenly find themselves in need, sometimes for medical reasons or other unforeseen situations.

The Lions Campground is a beautiful, well-kept camp facility on the east edge of Virden. Treed lots and a nearby creek, along with the necessary amenities, provide visitors to Virden with a great place to camp from spring through to fall. This campground helps make Virden a destination. In recent years, the club has carved out a few more camping spots. The Lions were joined by Cubs and Scouts for the spring clean-up.

The battery drive is another fundraiser of note. Hard work, commitment and donations from the public make this possible, usually twice per year.

Lions cleaned up ditches around Virden last Thursday evening and on Saturday, members were the attendants for the Household Hazardous Waste collection day on Saturday.

Aside from the work, the club also has fun. They meet twice per month, one of those meetings being a supper meeting.

Over the years there have been female versions of the Lions Club, but here in Virden, as in other clubs, females are welcome to become regular members of the Lions Club. At present Virden has only one lady Lion, but the club would gladly welcome more women to the ranks.
