The defending South West Baseball League Champions, the Virden Oilers opened up their regular season play with a 13-2 road win in Rivers Tuesday, May 23 against the Comets. This game marked the Rivers Comets South West Baseball League debut at home and faced a tough loss. Zane Sawyer was the winning pitcher for the Oilers Tuesday night to get off to a great start in regular season play.

The Oilers didn’t manage to carry the momentum from the first game in the next two games, as they were defeated by the Reston Jays Friday, May 26 at Virden’s season home opener, and Boissevain took a 5-2 win over the Oilers Sunday afternoon.

Currently the Oilers are sitting in third place in the league with a 1-2-0 record; a 0-2 record at home, 1-0 record on the road and a .33 win percentage.  The Oilers have 20 runs for and 17 runs against in three games played. The Reston Jays are in first place in the league after two games played and a 2-0 record, and the Oak River Dodgers are in second place after three games played and a 2-1 record. The bottom three teams consist of the Elkhorn Expos, Hamiota Red Sox and the Rivers Comets.

After three games on the road the Oilers return home for a four game home stretch. Come out and support the Oilers at their next home game Wednesday, June 7 against the Rivers Comets at 7:00 p.m.
