With Virden as headquarters, an oil drilling crew is searching for oil in a wide territory in southwestern Manitoba. The crew arrived here last Wednesday from Oklahoma with eight trucks and the latest type of drilling equipment. The men are employed by the United Geophysical Co. of Pasadena, California, a subsidiary of the California Standard Co., a subsidiary of Standard Oil of California. This like the Canadian Imperial Oil Co. which discovered the field at Leduc, Alberta, is in turn a subsidiary of Standard Oil of New Jersey.

The drilling crew is using buildings at Virden Airport for housing the personnel, several of whom are married and are accompanied by their wives, and also for housing their equipment. The engineering staff here is being assisted by juniors, mostly young university engineering graduates.

The drilling crew has been supplemented by several local, unskilled workers.
