Virdenites to the number of about 2,000 including several hundred children, hoping to get a glimpse of the King and Queen, gathered bright and early last Thursday morning in the C.P. railway yard. While everything possible had been done to secure a personal appearance of Their Majesties at Virden there was nothing to indicate that they might appear except their own gracious desire to meet the wishes of their subjects so freely displayed at points east when at all possible. In fact a wire from the King’s private secretary late Tuesday night of last week expressed regret that it would be impossible for Their Majesties to make an appearance before reaching Elkhorn on May 25th. The crowd that gathered in Virden had no reason to expect an appearance and could not be disappointed when what was only a hope was not gratified. They realized that Their Majesties could not possibly make continuous appearances without periods of rest. Their royal tour meant a great strain physically and with true loyalty and devotion the people here were satisfied with a view of the royal train, probably the most modern and most beautiful the world has yet produced. Disappointed that they were unable to pay tribute to their King and Queen personally they were naturally but with no criticism of Their Majesties or anyone.
