Million Dollar Construction Project Announced For Double Elementary Air Training School at Virden, Man.

Air command headquarters announced Friday that tenders have been called for the construction of a million dollar building project at Virden for a double elementary air training school.

This will be good news to Virden Board of Trade members, the town council and citizens generally, who almost from the inception of flying have taken a keen interest and willingly spent money and effort in promoting the development of aviation. Virden was one of the first communities to receive a license for an airport and more than 20 years ago was the only point on the prairies west of Winnipeg where customs clearance for airplanes coming from outside countries could be made. We were told by many flyers, who have since become prominent in Canadian aviation circles, that Virden was an ideal place for air development and we were convinced that this was true. When the present tremendous air training project was announced our Board of Trade and Town Council immediately became active in an effort to convince the authorities that our aviation background, together with the natural facilities of the community, deserved consideration. With the active support of our member of parliament, Mr. J. E. Matthews, and others who knew that Virden was well located for a part in Canada’s great plan to train aviators for the Empire, the campaign continued until now success is assured and Virden will have a part in serving in the Empire’s air effort to win the present war and to provide defence forces that may help to eliminate future wars. The Virden project is probably the last of the large projects for No. 2 air training command.

It is probable that work will start with as little delay as possible as the schools here are scheduled to be ready for operation by the end of next April.
