Thieves netted a haul of more than $5,000.00 in cash and cheques in an early morning break-in at McNeill’s I.G.A. Foodliner on Monday July 29. The loot consisted of $3500.00 in cash and more than $1500.00 in cheques.
Entry to the building was made through a hole smashed through a concrete block wall at the side of the building. The front of the safe, situated at the front of the store, was pried off and the cash, cheques and other items taken. It is believed that the thieves made a fast exit from the store by forcing the front doors.
Tools used in the break-in were stolen earlier from a CPR tool shed. The tools were left in the store.
RCMP investigating the theft have followed up several leads without success.
Identifiable objects taken from the safe include: a red leather zippered case containing insurance policies; two 7 by 10-inch white canvas bags with no markings; two 10 by 14-inch white canvas bags, one marked No. 2, the other marked No. 3; one white canvas bag with a flap from which the fastener is missing; one small white canvas bag, 5 by 7-inches with drawstring; a brown leather trucker’s wallet with one fastener missing.
Anyone finding any of these objects or noticing anyone trying to cash cheques made payable to McNeill’s I.G.A. Foodliner is asked to report immediately to the RCMP, phone 83, Virden.
During the same night, a break-in was made at Virden Curling Rink but nothing of value was reported missing.
