Manitoba Royal Purple holds AGM in Virden

Kevin Tutthill speaks on brain injury

The Manitoba Royal Purple Association Annual General Meeting was hosted by Virden Royal Purple on April 28 at the Virden Baptist Church meeting room. Thirty-five members from four lodges were registered.

President Rita Harrison of Winnipegosis called the meeting to order with her welcoming remarks followed by Opening Ceremonies and the Introduction of Visitors.

Introduced were our National President Lorraine Pezzutto from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Past National Presidents Elsie Bottenfield of Kenora, Ont. and Sandi Lougheed of Beechy, Sask. and Shirley Gibson of Virden and the Past Provincial Presidents of the Man. Association (Shirley Gibson and Betty Anderson of Virden among them).

There are 88 members registered in Manitoba.

The finance report and budget were presented as well as the Provincial President’s Report and reports were given of each lodge by the lodge presidents.

Brain Injury Posters

The Brain Injury posters that had been sent on to be judged provincially were available for viewing. Several Fort La Bosse School Division students were winners in the Provincial contest and will be receiving their prizes.

Our Association has partnered with the Manitoba Brain Injury Association (MBIA) and Sandi Lougheed spoke on how we can assist with the overall awareness and prevention of brain injury with our donations to MBIA.

President Pezzuto gave her message to the meeting, speaking on her travels this year, the benefits of working for our communities, and the upcoming National Convention in Winnipeg July 15-17, encouraging all to attend.

It will be five years next year since we went through our changes within the Royal Purple and she encouraged everyone to “Just Give It Your Best Shot”.

We held a Memorial Service for three deceased members in the last year, one of those members being Joy Smith of Virden Lodge.

Lunch was then served by the Virden Baptist Church Ladies and following lunch we had two guest speakers.

Tutthill guest speaker

Kevin Tutthill of Elkhorn spoke to us about his accident last year and the injuries he sustained, his time in hospital and in rehab at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg with nothing but praise for the staff there. He spoke highly of all the people he credited for helping him heal and get through his injury to where he is today. He attends the MBIA meetings in Brandon.

The next speaker was David Sullivan of Winnipeg who works for MBIA and spoke on what they do to help people with brain injuries who attend the support meetings in Brandon, Dauphin, Selkirk and Winnipeg.

They deal with prevention programs, workshops and special events for all attendees. These two speakers gave us all a better insight into how we could help.

We had one resolution to go to National Convention and then the election of officers was held.

Rita Harrison was elected for a second year as President. Directors from each Lodge were called for and Marlene Heaman and Fran Bayliss were elected from our Virden Lodge. Thanks girls! Installation of officers was held followed by a message from President Rita Harrison.

The next Annual General Meeting will be held in Winnipeg on May 4, 2019.

Good of the Order was held followed by Closing Ceremonies and a social time followed with coffee and cookies.
