Thank You to the Animals

A Poem by Elkhorn's Grade 2 / 3 class

Thank you to the animals.

Thank you to the elephants.

The elephants that carried heavy supplies.

The elephants that carried injured soldiers.

The elephants that uprooted trees to get wood for England.

And the elephants that hauled heavy equipment out of the sticky mud.

Thank you to the dogs.

                The dogs that found landmines.

The dogs that delivered secret messages.

The dogs that warned about enemy soldiers.

And the dogs that cheered up lonely soldiers.

Thank you to the cats.

The cats that cuddled with injured soldiers.

The cats that ate the mice that ate the sailors’ food.

And the cats that caught the rats that spread diseases.

Thank you to the birds.

The birds that carried secret messages.

And the birds that tested the tunnels’ air.

Thank you to the bears.

The bears that were good luck charms.

The bears that cheered up lonely soldiers.

And the bears that were company mascots.

Thank you to the horses.

The horses that fought in battles.

And the horses that carried soldiers.

Thank you to the elephants, the dogs, the cats, the birds, the bears, and the horses.

Thank you to the animals.
