Canada Day 150

A splendid time for all at the biggest event in Victoria Park
Canada day 150

Saturday, July 1st is shaping up to be one of the biggest Canada Day events ever to be held at Victoria Park in Virden. There will be a variety of free activities which will appeal to young and old alike. The day will get started with a Canada Day Parade through the streets of Virden beginning at 12 Noon. The parade will form up at the curling rink under the direction of Parade Marshal Herb Warkentin. If you want to enter a float, please contact Herb at 204-748-1717 or simply show up at the curling rink at 11:30 a.m.  The parade will end at Victoria Park. In the meantime there will be free swimming at the Virden pool from 11:00 – 2:00.

The official ceremonies have been moved up to 1:00 p.m. this year. While we all enthusiastically sing O Canada, led by Laura Eslinger, our Canadian flag will be raised by Legion Veterans. This will be followed by the cutting of the official Canada 150 cake by former mayors of Virden. Canada Day birthday cake will be distributed after the official ceremonies to all those in attendance from a location near the Chevron Stage.

Children’s activities begin at 2:00 p.m. in the southeastern portion of the park under the direction of Jennifer Glendinning. The committee needs volunteers to assist with these activities. If you can help, call or text Jennifer 204-851-2396.

Again this year, Kerr’s Bouncy Castles will be set up in the park and will operate from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission to the castles as well as other children’s activities is free.

Top-notch entertainment on the Chevron Stage begins at 1:30 p.m. and continues until 5:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chair and come enjoy a great variety of local talent.

The Canada Day Committee will have a food booth located in the southeast section of Victoria Park where people can enjoy a hamburger or hot dog for a reasonable price. Pop, water and chips will also be available. The committee still needs volunteers to work a shift in the food booth. Please contact Marilee Coulter at 204-748-8839 or Wendy Tolton at 204-748-8226 if you can help.

A new feature for Canada Day 150 in Victoria Park this year will be a beer garden which runs from 4:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. This activity is a fundraiser hosted by organizers for the Virden Spray Park.

Another new event for Canada Day 150 is Old Fashioned Picnic Races which run from   5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in front of the Chevron Stage. These events are open to one and all.
