Chorale productions presents Shrek

Musical comedy Shrek will be presented by the Virden Collegiate Institute (VCI) from May 11 – 13 at the Aud Theatre.

Musical comedy Shrek will be presented by the Virden Collegiate Institute (VCI) from May 11 – 13 at the Aud Theatre. Shrek follows the Dreamworks’ movie; with the damsel-not-so-in-distress Fiona, Donkey the noble steed, the villainous Lord Farquaad, and a cast of classic storybook characters. Characters challenge the surly Shrek to become an unlikely and reluctant hero. This fractured fairytale farce will leave the audience with a song in their heart and giggles in their guts.

Shrekcharacter will be played by Grade 12 student Brandt Unger. “Brandt is a definite leader in the choral program at VCI,” says Michelle Chyzyk, Director/Producer, “He took on his first lead role in last year’s Aida production, and the part of Shrek is an extreme contrast to his last year’s character Prince Radames.” Chyzyk adds, “It is fun to challenge this clever young man and he will definitely astound you with his performance.”

The role of quirky and feisty Princess Fiona will be shared by two extraordinary young performers; Laural Eslinger, a Grade 11 student, and Jessica McBride, a Grade 12 student. “These two talented and intellectual young women are a joy to work with, so incredibly coachable and both are dramatically and vocally gifted,” says Chysyk.

Noah Freisen takes the stage as Donkey. Chysyk says, “His audition made it incredibly clear - the energy and attention to detail that he gives to every task he is assigned.” Freisen has wonderful comedic timing and physicality to suit this role. “A perfect fit for his final year at VCI,” says Chysyk.

“The talk of the town has been relative newcomer, Dane Leslie, in the role of Farquaad,” says Chysyk. Leslie was the surprise of the auditions. He has such a resonant voice and has worked to bring this hilarious character to life.

Pinnochio will be played by Bruce Reimer; Emily Cochrane and Kennedy Charles play Gingy.
