“Pick Me Up On Your Way Down,” crooned Larry Gabriel with the L-Tones, Thursday evening in Victoria Park. The L-Tones played on Jubilee stage on a beautiful evening, with a good crowd to enjoy their country music.

The L- Tones (named for Leona, Leonard and Larry) are a smaller version of the main group, Southern Country.

Elkhorn’s Leona Joseph is well known for her rich vocals. She sings and plays acoustic guitar.

Leonard Downer from Maryfield plays a fine fiddle. “Lone Star Rag” was on the menu that evening.

The elder fiddler initially was an inspiration to Grayson Ross (now, one of the finest young fiddle players in Westman).

Larry Gabriel from Virden sings and plays a Fender Telecaster, a vintage electric guitar.

John Dunfield from Virden plays bass guitar.  “He had put his base and amp in the closet. I phoned John up ... long story short, if you’ve got a gift, you should be sharing it,” says Joseph. Sure enough he dusted off his music equipment, and it turns out, “he’s a fantastic singer”.

The L-Tones are a fairly recent invention. Joseph says, “We had to come up with a name for the group, without all seven there.” This group is more portable and plays many seniors venues from Brandon into Saskatchewan.

A few numbers into the performance, dancing broke out in the grassy park. There was a youngster turning cartwheels and coaxing his mum to dance with him.

Joseph is always pleased to see this. “I hope we will we be able to keep that old tradition of dancing and playing.”

In one week, it’s the bigger band, “Southern Country” playing music in the park to finish up the summer series.
