4H public speakers compete in provincials

The 2022 Provincial Communications Extravaganza was held in Winnipeg

The 2022 Provincial Communications Extravaganza was held in Winnipeg at the Canad Inns Polo Park on April 30 where several local 4H members from different clubs took first or second in public speaking for their age categories.
Christyna Caldwell has delivered a speech during each of her 12 years of 4-H with the Kenton Kraftsmen to become a stand-out speech writer and presenter. She’s won provincial competition two years running.
Pleased with her accomplishment she says, “It is such an honour to speak with and against so many talented young adults from across the province.”
This year she chose a very current topic for the seven-to-10-minute Adult category titled The Telephone Game.
“I wrote my speech about the dangers of sharing information without ensuring it is all accurate and true, and how with people getting information from unvetted sources like social media, misinformation can spread like wildfire!
“I took a lot of time to decided on my topic for my final year in 4-H. Winning Provincials last year in the Senior category with my speech about my Petition to amend a section of the Criminal Code was such an honour, I wanted to make sure I chose a topic that would be as impactful in the Adult Category. My Mum has spent the last 14 years educating kids and adults on topics around social media so it felt like a natural choice. I feel it's such an important topic to discuss.”
Christyna claims she’s not naturally outgoing, but 4H speaking has been excellent experience for her.
“As an extremely shy child, giving a speech each year has helped me build the confidence to be able to step outside my comfort zone and speak at each level from Club to Zones to Areas and the last two years at Provincials.”
Caldwell says this provincial win means she has the opportunity to submit a speech for consideration as a Manitoba representative at a National Level. She has not yet decided if she will do that.
“With this being my graduating year, and my plate being rather full, I have not yet decided if I will take part.”
Speaking at provincials means the 4H-ers have already delivered their speeches within their own clubs, and twice more before the Winnipeg competition.

Jo-Hannah Logan, age 9, has been with the Lenore Beef Club for four years and a member of Archie Light Horse Club

At the Cloverbud level, Jo-Hannah competed in public speaking within her home 4H club. Jo-Hannah did so well, she moved on to speak at the Virden Zone competition, where she qualified to present her speech at Brandon for the Southwest Region. Jo-Hannah qualified to go on to Provincials in Winnipeg where she was one of six Cloverbuds in her category.
Her presentation, a visual demo /speech was titled ‘Roping’ and no wonder since that is an important part of Jo-Hannah’s life. She’s been taking roping lessons from Shane Brown and is the owner of two horses. One of them is Bucky, her buckskin roping horse who is also 9, just like her owner.

Her presentation included a picture board and a roping demonstration. She brought her ropes and a roping dummy along. Asking a judge to assist her (hold the rope), Jo-Hannah also demonstrated how she cares for her ropes, and at the conclusion, she roped her dummy. She earned second place in her Cloverbud category.

Abby Pearn, a Grade 8 student in Virden stood second in the Intermediate category. This is Abby's first year in the her 4H group, the Archie light Horse And Pony Club. Her mother Lisa said that Abby didn’t seem nervous by the time she spoke in Winnipeg, but mom was a bundle of nerves. “I was nervous, but she was as cool as a cucumber.”

In her speech titled Farm Life she talked about what she loves about farming. “It hit home with a lot of people,” says Lisa. Abby concluded her speech by saying “I decided to write this speech because even on the best days, something goes wrong. But we learn from it, move on and enjoy living in the best place on earth.”
