Friday afternoon, May 5 at about 2:30 p.m. Town of Virden’s siren rang beckoning firefighters to a call. Emergency responders including RCMP, WDFD and EMS ambulance attended a two-vehicle collision at the junction of Hwy #83 near Virden and Hwy #1. The westbound lanes of the TransCanada remained blocked for over an hour, with highway traffic backed up for several kilometres.

The accident occurred when a northbound vehicle from Hwy#83 crossing the eastbound lanes of Hwy #1 failed to yield when crossing the westbound lanes, hitting a westbound SUV. The driver of that northbound vehicle suffered no injuries.

Of the four occupants in the SUV, one person received non-life-threatening injuries; the other occupants were unharmed.

An investigation is ongoing, but according to RCMP media relations, charges laid against the driver who failed to yield, include “dangerous operation causing bodily harm”. Photo/Anne Davison
