Area trio play for Chiefs

Three area players are looking to help the Yellowhead Chiefs U18 AAA male team succeed this season.

Virden’s Davis Thompson, Elkhorn’s Foxx McColl, and Manson’s Kurt Rookes are all members of the Shoal Lake-based regional team in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League. After two weekends of play, the team is 2-2.

The Chiefs return nine players from last year’s season that was abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Regarding the team’s strengths, head coach Thomas Heapy said, “Early on we are looking to have depth in our forward position and are goaltending with Jase Wareham (from Rivers) and Nathan Braun (from Plumas).”

McColl is a 16-year-old defenceman. The 5-foot-8, 155-pound athlete has a goal and an assist through four games.

“McColl is a high-skilled player and offensive-minded D-man,” Heapy said.

Thompson, 17, has played parts of the past two seasons with the Chiefs. After four games this season, the 6-foot, 195-pound forward has collected an assist. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Rookes plays defence. The 16-year-old has an assist through four games.

“Rookes and Thompson are both big bodies that can play a physical game,” Heapy said.
