Arrest made in 2019 homicide on Birdtail Sioux

A homicide was committed over two years ago. Police have arrested a suspect but they are still investigating, looking for more information.

On March 20, 2023, RCMP Major Crime Services arrested and charged Cherisse Mckay, 28, with Manslaughter in relation to the Jan. 7, 2019, homicide of a 28-year-old man in Birdtail Sioux First Nation. Mckay, also from Birdtail Sioux First Nation, was remanded into custody.

On Jan. 7, 2019 when the incident occurred, it was a Monday evening at about 6 p.m. when Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) responded to a 911 call to a local residence in Birdtail Sioux First Nation. A man was reported to be in cardiac arrest.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the 28-year-old man had died from an apparent stab wound.

MFNPS officers, along with RCMP Major Crime Services, continued with the investigation. They located and interviewed persons of interest who were with the victim during the course of the day prior to the 911 call being placed. Anyone with any information was asked to notify police or Crime Stoppers.

No further information has been released other than the arrest of Mckay.

Birdtail Sioux First Nation is located 15 minutes northwest of Miniota.
