Battle of the Books, 2022

Reston and Elkhorn battled it out, reading for comprehension and for top honours.

Congratulations to Elkhorn School who took home Gold and Silver at the 13th Annual Fort La Bosse Battle of the Books.

Battle of the Books is an extra curricular reading activity for students in Grades 5 and 6. It’s a competition where students must read at least seven of 10 of the books chosen by the host school librarian.

Teams usually consist of up to four students who answer five rounds of 20 factual questions about the books to determine a winner.

The Battle originated in Reston School and has been held there with the exception of 2020 when Oak Lake School was to host, but due to Covid, the Battle was cancelled.

In 2021 Reston School held their own Battle using Epic online books because regularly circulated books needed to quarantine between users.

This year Elkhorn and Reston participated, and on Thursday, March 17 at Reston School, Grade 5 / 6 students were able to test their knowledge of the books read.

Reston has hosted nearly 100 students through the years. Students begin reading the books in December and the Battle takes place in March.

Interesting fact: after surveying the students who had to read electronically last year, they overwhelmingly prefer a hard copy book to read.

Librarian, Reston School
