Bridge rebuild means months of a detour

Deconstruction and replacement of Seventh Ave. N. bridge over Scallion Creek has started.

A new bridge will mean pedestrians can once again safely cross the creek from Seventh Ave. N. to the downtown and places on King St. The walkway has been roped off for a number of years. However, for now, it means a major traffic detour for a section of Virden.

on about Nov. 28. a backhoe ripped into the old Seventh Ave. N. bridge adjacent to King St. as deconstruction began. The project is to be completed by the end of June 2023. A new bridge will include a pedestrian walkway adjoining a sidewalk along King Street.

In the meantime, to access the residential sector, several businesses, a daycare, and a church, traffic must continue on King St. W. to connect with Thomas Drive; or take the Ninth Ave. turn, depending upon your destination.

Bridge replacement funding is from the Invest in Canada Program. DG Konkin Construction, whose bid came in under the allotted Town budget of $1.7M, is the general contractor on the project.

According to information on Konkin’s website, Greg Penner is the Operations President, Manager for the company is Brett Konkin. Konkin's past local building projects including Tundra Oil and Gas office in Virden and Riverdale Community Centre in Rivers.
