Canart elected

Clayton Canart was declared the new Ward 3 Councillor for the RM of Wallace-Woodworth.

Clayton Canart was declared the new Ward 3 Councillor for the RM of Wallace-Woodworth.

Canart, a young industry businessman and Elkhorn resident captured just two extra votes in Elkhorn, over Denis Lachapelle in a very tight municipal bi-election, with 62-64 votes.

Only residents and property owners in the village could vote in this election.

Just 126 people voted in this bi-election, that’s a 34% voter turn-out. The question remains, did the windy, cold January day discourage some voters?

Older Elkhorn residents had an opportunity on voting day, January 11, as two mobile poles attended Elkwood Manor and Elkview Lodge.

An advance pole earlier in January only attracted five voters.

Election official, Carole-Anne Brethour explained that people also had the opportunity to receive a sealed envelope ballot, but no one called for this service.

The cold and the blowing snow on the day following the election meant that Brethour announced the pole results from RM of Wallace-Woodworth’s Kenton Office, not venturing to the main office near Virden.

Canart is expected to be sworn into office at the next council meeting on January 24.
