CIBC closes

In mid-August, after a hundred years plus service to the Elkhorn and area community, CIBC is closing its door, a decision made by management at head office in Toronto. Over those good, and hard, years the people of the area have supported the bank, with many of its customers having a lifetime involvement with the branch.

Recently the Elkhorn bank staff held a community barbeque in front of the bank that brought out a large number of bank customers and supporters of all ages, with the majority of them being very long term customers.

Chairs were sat up and many other people brought their lawn chairs or sat on the wide bank steps to enjoy the well prepared lunch, tell stories to the staff and tell them how much they will miss the personal and friendly service they gave to everyone.

On the food table was a fresh bouquet of colorful flowers and with a thank you card for all the years of kind service signed by many members of the local seniors drop in centre. In fact the card also included a collection of money from the seniors as a gift. In the crowd that day were many former bank employees and managers who had made their home in Elkhorn upon their retirement.

Over 200 hot dogs, drinks and chips were served up by the staff  with the welcome of the late arrival of  the daily bank courier from Brandon, who brought out his young daughter to share in the event.

Said bank manager, Rachael MacDonald, “I am so sorry to see the bank and the beautiful historic building close. I'm sorry for the people of the community, especially the senior residents who have supported us so much over the years. I am also sorry to see our staff members, Janet and Della go; they have been so good to work with and I thank them for all the help they have given me and our customers.”

As a small community, the loss of the bank will be a major blow to its long term growth and an inconvenience to many senior residents and business. The option offered by the bank’s head office is that we can all do online banking, but given security concerns and the age of many of its long-term customers it’s not the easiest option.
