The town of Cromer has recently made some well needed improvements to their Community Rink and United Church. The ramps and steps at the rink were upgraded about two years ago when the kitchen and bathrooms were renovated.

“Cromer Rink has been a beehive of activity during the Christmas break,” says Diane Elliott, volunteer and board of Directors with the Cromer Recreational Centre. “Many families have rented the rink for their gatherings as it offers a new kitchen, new bathrooms and seating/dining area. The ice surface provides lots of outdoor space for the children and adults to have fun and exercise skating or playing hockey. On Friday mornings, the community coffee groups get together for the weekly exchange of news. Cromer Rink is open to the public to skate on a daily basis.”

The church has also gained some upgrades which occurred in the early part of December 2021. Diane is the Secretary-Treasurer and member of the Cromer United Church and is very pleased with the improvements that have been made so far.

“We held a Candle Light Christmas Eve service with a few of its congregation attending,” adds Elliott. “Readings about the special Christmas story were heard, Christmas hymns were played on piano and violin, and there was a joy in the atmosphere to be able to attend this past year in person.

“Recently, the church has had some updates to the exterior with new white pine siding on the north wall as well as new steps, deck and ramp to ensure a safer entry for all. Sanding and painting of the remainder of the exterior is planned for early this year. Cromer United Church holds special services four times a year and an annual meeting. The next service will be held at Easter time.”

The United Church and the Community Rink have proven to be both symbolic and concrete to the origins of Cromer, a community that has seen much change but continues to thrive.
