Food Cupboard stocks up with community donations

Community members have reached into their pockets in Virden and Elkhorn to make sure the local food bank, Virden & Area Food Cupboard, is well supplied as winter sets in.

Keep Families Fed food drive was a joint effort between Valleyview Co-op, Virden Dodge and Twin Valley Co-op Ltd.  Store staff prepared 265 "Good Buy to Hunger" bags, purchased by the generous donations of the communities. Gift cards valued at $1,200 were donated by Co-op and Virden Dodge, along with an additional $1,200 in cash contributions. These were delivered to the Virden & Area Food Cupboard on Nov. 25.

Other fall donations to the Food Cupboard included the Virden Junior High donations of fresh vegetables to the Food Cupboard through their Peak of The Market fundraiser; Valleyview Co-op’s Fuel Good Days in the amount of $2,024; the United Way winner for Tundra Oil & Gas employees, Anna Sproul donated her $1000 winnings to the Food Cupboard; and in October Red Apple once again held a food drive.

Families are reminded that there is only one hamper day in December. To receive a hamper you must phone 204-512-2321 by Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 4:00 p.m. The next hamper day will be January 13th.
