Footcare is a foundational health service

If you don’t look after them, you’re going to pay a price

Our feet may not be the first thing on our mind, in fact, geographically they are often out of sight, out of mind. Our feet have a very important job to do, and they may complain that they need a little more regular attention, that they aren’t completely happy.

Bonnie Crawford with her Harmony Footcare provides footcare for many seniors in the area. She is an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and a trained footcare specialist. Crawford’s services extend from Elkhorn to Kenton and Hamiota, with most clients in Virden.

She says footcare is vital because that’s our foundation. “Your feet are your main mode of transportation. If you don’t look after them, you’re going to pay a price, eventually.”

She stresses the value of good shoes and regular footcare. Sometimes toenails become thick and difficult to trim. Crawford trims toenails and can reduce corns and callouses.

“Sometimes, you may not even realize that you have sores, or cuts or problems with your feet, because you can’t see your feet.” Also, a sore joint means that you have begun to walk differently and that can also affect the shape and condition of your feet. Crawford says that’s when it’s important to have another set of eyes checking for foot problems.

“It’s just nice to have somebody to suggest different ideas. I’m just a basic foot care nurse. I have a podiatry drill that I use to reduce callouses and thick nails. I have nippers to trim and files to make things smooth.”

She also says, “I have a scope of practice that I have to follow. If I see problems, I will refer them to the podiatrist or the doctor.”

As an independent provider, Crawford comes to a central location, such as Evergreen Place, and posts a sign-up sheet for that day’s appointments. Crawford also makes house calls, and she has openings for new clients.

For clients with insurance such as Blue Cross, or coverage under Veterans Affairs, Crawford gives receipts for insurance purposes or use as a medical expense.

When the trim is finished, “If the client wants it, I finish up with lotion and a foot rub.”
