Virden’s Jace Freeman skipped his rink to the championship at the Morris Fall Manitoba Junior Curling Tour event last weekend.

The 16-year-old and his rink went undefeated at the event. They beat Team McDonald, 4-3, in the final to take the championship. Freeman said that determination helped his rink succeed.

“We had a rough first bonspiel at the end of August and didn’t play up to our potential, so we were on a mission to prove that we came to play,” the son of Graham and Roxanne Freeman said. “We knew we had to play very well this weekend because we were matched with some tough teams. But we played great and battled hard every game and came out of the bonspiel as the champions with a 5-0 record.”

Along with Freeman, the rink consists of third Ryan Ostrowsky, a 17-year-old from Winnipeg; second Cyrus Brandt, a 20-year-old Blumenort product, and 18-year-old Andrew McKay, a lead from Sanford. Freeman had not really met his current teammates until their first bonspiel last season. He had played them in previous bonspiels and heard they were looking for a team.

“We played very well together from the start last season and we have become very close friends ever since,” Freeman said.
