Guns discovered at roll-over near Portage

Portage la Prairie RCMP respond to rollover and locate handguns

Near midnight a vehicle accident led to the discovery of handguns.

On Nov. 16, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 26 at Road 34 West in the RM of Portage la Prairie. When officers arrived on the scene, three occupants of the vehicle were located. They were not from Portage but were from Ontario and British Columbia.

The two male occupants appeared visibly intoxicated and were treated for minor injuries. The female occupant, later determined to be the driver, was not intoxicated nor was she physically injured in the collision.

When the vehicle was searched, ammunition was located, which led to the arrest of the three individuals. When one of the men, a 42-year-old from East York, Ont., was searched, two handguns were found concealed on his person. The ammunition found matched one of the firearms.

The two other individuals were released without charge. Todd McGarragle is charged with carrying a concealed weapon x2, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose x2, possession of a weapon obtained by crime, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition without a license, and unsafe storage of a firearm. He remains in custody.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
