IIU investigating after BPS deploy “less lethal” firearm

BPS officer subsequently used a less lethal firearm to subdue and arrest him.
The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating after Brandon Police Service (BPS) used a “less lethal” firearm to subdue a male, resulting in minor injuries.
BPS notified the IIU on November 5, 2021 of an incident occurring that same day involving the discharge of a firearm.  According to the notification, the BPS received a call for service around 4:20 p.m. involving a male armed with a knife on 18th Street in Brandon. Officers located the male in the area of 15th and Van Horne Avenue. Attempts were made to have the male surrender but his erratic behaviour continued. A BPS officer subsequently used a less lethal firearm to subdue and arrest him. The male was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre where he was treated for a minor injury and released into custody.
In accordance with the Police Services Act and regulations, any injury resulting from the use of a firearm is deemed a serious injury and, as such, results in a mandatory investigation by IIU.
Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll free at 1-844-667-6060.
The investigation is ongoing, no further details will be provided at this time.
