Kendra Kay makes top 10 in CBC music contest

Elkhorn-born singer/songwriter, Kendra Kay, has come a long way and she s going the distance. On Friday, Feb. 28, Kay was announced among 10 finalists in the CBC Music contest, Searchlight 2020. Kay was chosen from a list of 100 artists.

Elkhorn-born singer/songwriter, Kendra Kay, has come a long way and she s going the distance. On Friday, Feb. 28, Kay was announced among 10 finalists in the CBC Music contest, Searchlight 2020.

On the site it says: “Hailing from tiny Elkhorn, Man. (population: 479), 23-year-old Kendra Kay delivers a huge country sound,” and she does, soft, smooth yet punchy. Her performance tune: That's how it's done!

Kendra Kay recently signed on worldwide with Sakamoto Agency, won the 2019 MCMA Female Artist of the Year, along with earning the MCMA Fan’s Choice Award for the second year in a row. Along the way, she has amassed half a million streams, 17 weeks in the Top 100 Canada Country Airplay and won the 2019 Canadian Independent Music Video of the Year Award for “Best Country Video.”

Searchlight is CBC Music’s hunt for Canada’s next great undiscovered musical talent.

The winner will be announced on Thursday, March 5 on q on CBC Radio One at 10 a.m. ET. The grand prize includes a spot in the Allan Slaight Juno Master Class, a ticket to the 2021 Juno Awards to perform at JunoFest and take in all the Juno festivities (including the awards show), a week in a recording studio at the National Music Centre in Calgary, and a trip to Toronto to perform alongside Canada's best artists in front of thousands of fans at the 2020 CBC Music Festival at Echo Beach in May.

The winner will be decided by a combination of audience voting and choice picks from our producers and celebrity judges, including Zubin Thakkar, Vivian Barclay, Allan Reid, Julijana Capone and Kai Black.
