Reston & Area Veteran Memorial Banner committee is excited to announce that during this Remembrance Day period, for the first time, veteran banners will hang proudly in our communities.

With interest growing locally a committee was formed to implement a Veteran Banner Project. The project is a way to engage the community in honouring our veterans that will contribute to the continued recognition, education and respect from future generations and promote and celebrate Remembrance Day in our communities.

Banners will hang in the towns of Reston and Pipestone for the first year and if enough interest is shown, in following years, in Sinclair and Cromer as well.

Veterans being honoured must be current or past residents or have a tie to our area. We hope displaying the names, faces and stories of our veterans will be a visual reminder of their sacrifice.

Any individual, family or organization may sponsor a banner. If you do not have a veteran to sponsor the committee would be happy to coordinate a match for you. If you would like to participate in this project but do not wish to sponsor a veteran, donations will gratefully be accepted to help with the cost of hardware needed to hang them. Donations over $25 will be issued a tax receipt and you will be recognized.

To sponsor a veteran, we are asking for pertinent information such as name, rank, theater of war, hometown and a photo, preferably of the veteran in uniform. The committee is also asking for a short biography of the veteran which will be found on our web site which will come in handy as you can read about the veterans when you view the banners.

Banners will be the property of the Veteran Banner Project. A tax receipt will be issued for your participation and the banners will continue to hang each year as long as they remain in good condition. Sponsor forms are available at the RM of Pipestone office and Reston District Library.

Fifty sponsors will be accepted this year on a first come basis with a deadline for submissions and payment of August 1st. Banners will hang from mid-October to after Remembrance Day. If the limit of 50 is reached your name will go on a list for the following year.

Former Reston resident and graphic designer, Andrea Cook (Andrea Cook Design Co.) came on board to create our own design. The committee hopes to have a sample banner on display soon.

If you have any questions the Veteran Memorial Banner Committee would gladly assist you however they can. Members are Kim MacKenzie, Derek Millard, Shawna Millard, Sharon Simms, Sherrill Berry, Garnet Williamson, Cathy Williamson, Clayton Jago and our youth representatives, Hanna Wray and Logan Taylor.
