Rural Post Offices Hit, Slip Sliding Semis, and Stolen Cars

March 22

At approximately 8:45 am, Westman RCMP received a report of a break and enter at the Post Office in Kenton. The door had been pried open. A safe was stolen that contained an undisclosed amount of cash, cheques and stamps. The Kenton Post Office was closed for the day.

At 9:40 am, RCMP received a report of a break and enter at the Canada Post office in Lenore. The door had been pried open. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.  

March 23

At approximately 9:25 am, Hamiota RCMP received a report of a break and enter at the Canada Post Office in Oak River. Entrance was gained through a window. Nothing was stolen. The Oak River Post Office was not closed for the day.

The investigation continues with the assistance of RCMP Forensic Identification Services, and police are not ruling out that these incidents are connected. 

March 24

Westman RCMP were dispatched to a collision on the Trans-Canada Highway. Due to other ongoing complaints, Blue Hills RCMP attended and found multiple semi-trucks blocking the highway. Investigation revealed that one eastbound semi had been travelling at a slow rate of speed due to slippery roads, began to slip and came to a stop out of caution. Another eastbound semi approaching from the rear saw the semi ahead of it coming to a stop but due to slippery conditions it was unable to come to a complete stop and rear ended the trailer of the first semi. Both vehicles were unable to move to move due to lack of traction. Tow trucks separated the vehicles. Meanwhile, a third semi slid partially off the roadway while attempting to come to a complete stop.  

RCMP responded to another complaint of a vehicle in the ditch on the Trans-Canada Highway. The caller recognized the vehicle as belonging to their ex that was recently reported stolen out of Brandon. RCMP members arrived to find a 33-year-old male from Brandon attempting to shovel snow to get the vehicle out. Members confirmed with Brandon Police Service that the vehicle was in fact stolen. The male was arrested for Theft of a Motor Vehicle and Possession of Stolen Property Over $5,000. He is scheduled for a first appearance in Virden Provincial Court. 

March 26

Westman RCMP responded to a complaint of a vehicle theft in the RM of Wallace-Woodworth. A grey 2012 Honda Ridgeline was stolen from a farm yard, and an orange Dodge Nitro with no license plates was left behind. Investigation revealed the Dodge Nitro to be stolen out of Saskatchewan. The Nitro was towed to Virden Detachment to be processed by members of the Forensic Identification Section. This investigation is ongoing. 

March 27

RCMP responded to a complaint of theft from a rural property in the RM of Wallace-Woodworth. The thieves made off with diesel motor oil and various tools. Investigation is ongoing. 

March 29

Police responded to another complaint of theft at a rural property in the RM of Wallace-Woodworth. The property owner woke to noises coming from his workshop. The owner then saw a truck leave the property quickly. Stolen were various Milwaukee brand power tools, batteries, a welder, jerry cans, and a 220-amp extension cord. Investigation into the theft is ongoing.

Westman RCMP responded to a complaint of an impaired driver. The caller was following the vehicle which was described as driving erratically. The suspect vehicle was located and the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was found to be impaired by alcohol, and driving with an invalid license. The 21-year-old male from the RM of Pipestone was released from custody with a court date scheduled in Virden Provincial Court. 

March 30

RCMP responded to a child welfare complaint in the town of Virden. Information provided was that an eight-year-old child was unable to wake the father. Police attended the residence and entered under the Child and Family Services Act to ensure the safety of the children. Inside, police located a 37-year-old male passed out with his arms around a three-year-old child. Both children were removed from the residence. The adult male was found to be wanted on an outstanding warrant from Winnipeg. The male was held in custody. 

April 4

Westman RCMP responded to an attempted theft of vehicle in the RM of Sifton. A farmer was amongst his cows during calving season when a truck was observed pulling into his yard. A person got out and tried to steal his truck. A small car was waiting at the end of the lane and honked several times to alert the driver of the other vehicle. Both vehicles took off. Description of truck: 2002 Ford F150, dark blue or black, no tail lights, and there were items in the back of the truck.
