Posing with the new scanner is hospital manager Stacey Weffing, Brenda Orr and Lana Bajus, representing the Elkhorn Foundation, and Gwen Clarke and Marilyn Carruthers representing the Health Auxiliary.

Through matching donations from the Elkhorn Foundation and the Virden and District Health Auxiliary, a new bladder scanner was purchased recently for the Virden Health Centre. The scanner is a portable, hand-held ultrasound device used to perform a non-invasive scan of the bladder; a painless procedure that eliminates the risks associated with unnecessary catheterization.

A portable bladder scanner is useful in urology, obstetrics and gynecology, rehabilitation, orthopedics,  neurology, ICU, emergency department, endocrinology, for physical examinations, nursing and health care.

It provides immediate detection of bladder volume, no need for professional ultrasound doctors. Its use as a daily care device on the ward can reduce the urinary tract infection rate associated with catheterization.

Along with many other applications, this portable device can be used to diagnose different types of urinary incontinence to assist in setting a treatment plan.
