When an MJHL player gets noticed by NHL scouts, you know he's doing something right.

Virden Oil Capitals forward Carson Buydens was among the skaters included in the National Hockey League’s Central Scouting Midterm rankings for the 2022 NHL Draft.

“It feels great to be on that list, up there with the best players from North America,” Buydens said. “It’s definitely rewarding, and I can’t wait to play the rest of the season.”

The 17-year-old from Gladstone was ranked 146th overall. He has 16 goals and 29 points in 31 games this season. He has committed to play at Princeton University.

Two other MJHL players cracked the rankings: Spencer Penner (197) of the Selkirk Steelers and Davis Fry (206). Strathclair’s Conor Geekie, who played last season for the Oil Caps, was ranked fourth overall. Through 34 games with the Western Hockey League’s Winnipeg Ice, the forward has 11 goals and 38 points.
