Pipestone Church celebrates Good Friday, Easter Sunday

There's more than tradition behind the church services held at Pipestone United Church. There's a history of the fellowship of faith.

The Palm Sunday Service on April 10 at the Pipestone United Church was led by Marianne Olfrey, minister of Reston United Church and with the Easter weekend approaching, she will be officiating the Good Friday Service on April 17 at the Pipestone United Church as well. Joyce Marsh, pastor of the Pipestone United Church will be in charge of the Easter Sunday Service on April 19, with that service being held at the Pipestone United church also. Both services will take place at 10:00 a.m.

“The church is decorated with colors for each season and for the Good Friday service it is decorated in black for a quiet somber service,” says Laura Elliott, member and secretary-treasurer of the Pipestone United Church. “The Easter Sunday service will be in colors of white.”

“In 1884, the Pipestone district held services in their homes and then the pioneers shared the school house for the church gatherings,” adds Elliott. “In 1893, the church building was built by the Presbyterian faith and a few years later, the Methodist faith felt they could support a minister and the church building was shared by the two congregations.”

“In 1958, Pipestone joined with Reston and Hillview churches to form a three-point charge with the minister residing in Reston. During the 129 years, additions and repairs have been made to the nice church we have today. This coming year we are looking at siding or painting the outside to help it last maybe for another 100 years,” replies Elliott.

Both churches take turns congregating in either Reston or Pipestone for Sunday services. “We held the services here in Pipestone at the Drop Inn Centre over the winter and Sunday, April 3, was the first service back in the church,” replies Joyce Marsh. “For the number of people that can come, the Drop Inn is already heated and the church is fairly big, plus there is a ramp at the Drop Inn and our church doesn’t have a ramp for accessibility.”

“Central United Church in Brandon is closing and they are having their last service at the end of this month,” replies Joyce. “We kind of wonder what is going to happen to us smaller churches if the bigger churches are closing.”
