Portage la Prairie RCMP investigating suspicious deaths

Information is continuing to be updated on a case of believed arson in Portage la Prairie.

On April 10, at approximately 1:00 am, RCMP responded to a house fire on 7th Street SE in Portage la Prairie.

When officers arrived the Fire Department was on scene extinguishing the fire. Once the fire was extinguished, three individuals were located deceased inside the home. Their deaths are considered suspicious.

An adult male was taken into custody.

RCMP Major Crime Services along with the Forensic Identification Section, Portage la Prairie RCMP Detachment and the Office of the Fire Commissioner  are investigating.

Officers are working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine cause of death and to confirm identities.

UPDATE:

The adult male who was placed into custody on April 10, 2022, has, as of April 11, been released.

“We know this a very difficult time for the community. We want to assure the residents of Portage la Prairie that our officers are doing everything they can to move this investigation forward,” said Cpl. Julie Courchaine, spokesperson for the Manitoba RCMP.

 “We have a number of specialized resources on-scene, including Major Crime Investigators and Forensic Identification Services as well as officers from the Portage la Prairie detachment.”  

Additional information is expected to be released on April 12, 2022.
