A few weeks ago the historic Elkhorn Post Office received major water damage, because of a buildup of water on the flat roof. The water builtup caused the roof to give way in spots and flood the vacant apartments above the Post Office. Water then worked its way down into the main floor Post Office and into the already flooded basement.

For the past week a work crew from Cancade Restoration of Brandon have been in the building cleaning up the overall damage and treating the water soaked areas with disinfectant chemical sprays. A company employee explained that their job was only to clean up and stabilize the building, so that an insurance inspection could be carried out and recommendations made to the village, owners of the property.

The plan to move the post office operation to the Legion Hall has been changed as Village maintenance records of the Post Office show that there is no asbestos danger in the structure, it having been removed several years ago.

In order to remove and clean up the postal box area, the lobby area will be closed for one day. This area has already seen the cleanup of the damaged floor area and now the ceiling area over the lobby boxes is next. The initial report suggested that certain walls, the ceiling, floors and the electrical areas are all in need of repairs. There is no time estimates of how long the repairs will take.
