Students have been working hard, getting the garden ready for the growing season. Early Years students have especially been engaged in starting the tomato seeds and observing the plants sprout under the grow lamps. Students have also been busy, getting their hands dirty planting seeds and pulling weeds. Tomatoes, chick peas, prairie grasses and a butterfly garden have all been added to our learning garden this spring. We look forward to harvesting the bounty of our hard work in the fall.

Each student at Oak Lake Community School (OLCS) recently received an evergreen seedling, which they took home for planting. The trees were donated to the school by the West Souris River Conservation District, and with a little TLC, they should grow up into tall, hearty trees.

This school year, students have focused on a variety of ways to give back to their community. Most recently, the Grade 7/8 class walked to the Oakwood Place, and helped plant petunias in the flower bed located at the front entrance of the seniors’ housing complex. The petunias are red and white, in honor of Canada’s 150th celebration. As well, students helped sew a set of six cotton pillowcase dresses, decorating the hems with festive ribbons. These dresses will be taken to a village in Africa, and handed out to little girls who need them.
