Reston water plant installing new pumps

Water is taking a detour to allow for an upgrade

An upgrade to Reston’s water plant, like all construction, means a slight detour - in this case, a by-pass line for the water on its way to homes and businesses in town.

The municipality is installing a new energy efficient pump system and creating more reserve capacity in this project with Manitoba Water Services Board.

Regional Utility Foreman, Tyson Anderson explains, “We are working on a water plant upgrade where we are updating to new VFD pumps and new piping in the water plant. We are also building a second reservoir cell to double our water storage capacity.”

To allow for the work at the water plant, the Town of Reston has an alternate water line in use this week and the municipality expects that to continue for almost two weeks. In an official notice, the RM of Pipestone has advised residents that the by-pass line was hooked up on Oct. 27 and is expected to supply water until Nov. 10.

During this time, they can expect some fluctuations in water pressure.

Anderson explains that the by-pass supplies treated water to the town, by-passing the reservoir.

“The by-pass line runs directly off a treated water line that would have been filling our water reservoir but we were able to run new piping and directly feed it to the town.”

That’s why the town will not have a reserve of water available during this period and the bulk fill station at the water plant will be out of commission. Residents who use this well will have to use the well north of town for water.

VFD pump system

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is a constant pressure pump where the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor varies. Constant pressure pumps are designed to start and stop over and over again without causing damage to the pump's motor. The VFD allows the motor to gradually ramp up to meet the actual flow and pressure demand, reducing water hammer and wear on mechanical parts.
