Seize the Day with Newsies Jr. at the Virden Aud Theatre

Virden Collegiate presents Disney’s Newsies Jr. at the Aud Theatre in Virden

Virden Collegiate, under the direction of Luke Munchinsky, is presenting four performances of Disney’s Newsies Jr. from Thursday, May 4 to Saturday, May 6. The inspiring 60-minute musical is based on the 1992 Disney film Newsies and the 2012 Broadway production of the same name.

Along with choreographer Shelby Cranston, Mr. Munchinsky, has been leading 29 high school students through the song and dance numbers.

He says the highlight of this musical are some of the “impeccably written songs and a story with a lot of heart.”

It’s evident that Munchinsky is enjoying the process and has confidence in the actors. He says, “It's also fantastic to see the students put so much of themselves into the show and I've been blown away by how much work they put into it, and that work is reflected in the product.”

This is a rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of young newsies in Manhattan. When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsies’ expense, Jack rallies young workers from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right.

Adapted especially for young performers, this musical consists of a Tony Award®-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award®-winner Harvey Fierstein, and includes rousing songs like “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “King of New York.”

Newsies Jr. is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message perfect for the whole family and every audience.

Munchinsky says it’s a funny show and the audience could certainly see it twice: “There are some pretty swell comedic bits throughout as well though, and there's enough going on in the action scenes you'd have to see multiple viewings of the show to catch it all.”

Theatre goers can purchase their tickets in advance at Andrew Agencies in downtown Virden.
