On June 9, at the Tundra Oil & Gas Place, the arena was full of excited children from numerous schools in the Forte La Bosse School Division. The children watched and took part in a Pow Wow demonstration by Dakota Nation dancers.
Students also learned much about Dakota culture from the Dakota Collection on display by Eugene Ross of Sioux Valley. The large, and museum quality, display consisted of of historical tools and photos, clothing with artistic beadwork, medicinal and smudging herbs, a display of how the entire bison was used, and much more. Eugene Ross interacted with children, sharing his knowledge of Dakota culture at his display.
Tee pees were also set up, and students were able to tour them.
The Pow Wow demonstration consisted of over a dozen dancers of all ages. Mesmerizing dancers performed, adorned in colourful, stunning headdresses and attire. The dancers performed to the beating of drums echoing throughout the arena.
Near the end of the demonstration, students were welcomed to join the dancers. Hundreds of children raced to the dancing circle to become part of the dancers’ performance.
Lola Thunderchild of Canupawakpa, said the event started in 2006 with her and a few other parents who had children that enjoyed dancing and sharing their culture. In its beginnings, the event was held at schools in the area. The Pow Wow has grown into an event that needed the space of the Tundra Oil & Gas Place arena, to hold all the people attending.
Nola Eagle, this year’s cordinator of the Pow Wow, reminded viewers in her opening statement that, “We are all just people, and it is important to show kindess to each other.”
