Skate park over half-way in fundraising

Q & A with committee
skate park

A representative of the Virden Skate Park committee, the treasurer, Lynette Grumpelt says they are over half-way toward their fundraising goals for the construction of the skate park. The park recently received a $4,000 donation from the Virden Run (see last week’s report on the 3K Run & 10K Family Run/Walk). The Run intends to once again partner with the skate park committee in 2019.

After a recent meeting the committee answered a few questions to update readers on the overall progress toward a build.

Q: Remind us of the size of your project.

A: The park will be comprised of an approximately 6,500 sq. ft. concrete park and will be surrounded by a green space.

Q: How much you yet need to raise to built the park?

A: At this time, we are working with a $250,000 to $275,000 budget, and are happy to report we have broken the $150,000 mark!

Q: Do you have a concept drawing or is it time for that yet?

A: We do not have a firm concept drawing but we have been working with a few designers to create a park that is both aesthetically pleasing to the public and caters to all levels of enthusiasts.

Q: Who is the skate park going to accommodate? Who might enjoy it?

A: This park will cater to skateboards, BMX bikes, scooters and roller-skates/blades. However, we want to make sure that this is a space that everyone can enjoy, regardless of whether they are enthusiasts or observers.

Q: What other skate park fundraisers can we expect to see in the community?

A: We will once again be holding our annual Claus for Celebration Holiday party, however we will be moving away from the format of a formal dinner and entertainment, this year.

We are hoping to participate in Downtown Daze. A larger, joint fundraising effort with Virden Spray Park is in the works for the fall.

Currently we are selling raffle tickets on a set of cruiser bikes, with a draw to be made at the July 1 festivities in Virden. Full details can be found on our Facebook page.

Q: What further help do you need?

A: If anyone would like to get involved as a volunteer, please get in touch with any of our committee members.
