Snow clearing gets attention

Street issues affect everyone in Virden. Here's what one resident says, bringing signatures with her.

Dear Editor:

I would like to thank the Town of Virden’s planning and finance committee chaired by Marc Savy for allowing me to present a petition at a recent meeting.

The committee was very generous in giving my delegation ample time to outline our request.

The petition, signed by 127 people, asks the Town to look for ways to improve the speed and efficiency with which it clears snow from our streets.

It also asks for snow removal from all public sidewalks or, alternatively, to employ a bylaw officer to ensure businesses keep their sidewalks clear and safe for those who use them (the latter is currently an unenforced bylaw).

We all know of someone who has been hurt due to snow or ice, especially when we have freeze/thaw cycles as we did this winter. Being proactive about safety is not only the right thing to do, it is bound to cost less than legal fees and court-ordered damages should a lawsuit result.

Our presentation also suggested ways to fund these improvements without adding to the tax burden.

We thank everyone who signed the petition and look forward to hearing the committee's action plan.

Heather Reimer, Virden
