Thanksgiving visits for many

For some it is news when they go away, for others it's news when they actually stay home.

Thanksgiving visitors with Alene Welch were Edy and Wayne Clayton, Wesley and Leilanie Clayton and Carmelle Hall.

Janice Simpson visited Wayne, Marie, Aaron and Drew for a lovely beef supper and cards.

Janice Simpson attended the funeral for her brother-in-law, Orley McLaughlin on Wednesday in Brandon.

Here we are past the middle of October. Oscar Wilde says, “And all at once, summer collapsed into Fall.” It really does seem to happen that way, doesn't it? One day it was warm with sunshine and the next - it's different. We've had Autumn in all it's glory. Let's just hold on to the experience that is October.

October is recorded as the sixth warmest month of the year. The average October temperature in Manitoba for daytime is 5.5 degrees. The average nighttime temperature is -2 degrees.

I am writing this article on Oct. 17. Here is a bit of trivia. In 1992, on Oct. 17, the Toronto Blue Jays played their first-ever World series game. On this day in 1979, Mother Teresa was named the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace. Maybe this is trivia too, but my parents spent a few years as administrators at a Mission Guest House in Calcutta, India and had the privilege of meeting Mother Teresa in person. It was a special experience for them.

On Oct. 17, 1907, the first commercial wireless telegraph was sent across the Atlantic Ocean. The movie, "Mr. Smith goes to Washington", starring James Stewart was released on Oct. 17, 1939. Oct. 17 is National Pasta Day. Pasta lovers can celebrate right here in our Virden restaurants for a delicious pasta meal.

Right - this is Evergreen news.

It was good to see Art Rouse home again after a week in the hospital. He'll be busy working on his diamond willow walking sticks again.

Emmi Schneider was delighted that the moving van brought her belongings from Kelowna, B.C. Now with the help of her family she'll be able to unpack and arrange and it will feel like home. The van came a week before it was scheduled to come, and an hour before it was to arrive the scheduled day. But Evergreen was helpful, and it wasn't long before all was carted into her suite.

Eileen Price had two Evergreen ladies, Joyce and Louise, over for Thanksgiving dinner. Such a good idea.

Vern and Margaret Rollo went to Russell and Joan Sararas, north of Virden, for a Thanksgiving dinner.

This is how Evergreen residents are - for some it is news when they go away, for others it's news when they actually stay home on the weekend.

Let's all remember to keep safe from Covid, wear masks and social distance where required. The restrictions still apply.

Quote for the Day: "Ah, lovely October, as you usher in the season that awakens my soul, your awesome beauty compels my spirit to soar like a leaf caught in an Autumn breeze and my heart to sing like a heavenly choir." - Peggy Toney Horton
