VCI students wade through exams, enjoy sports

The pandemic, with Omicron, brought challenges to end-of-semester exams and to sports programs.

The month of January has brought both challenges and triumphs for VCI. When students returned from the winter break, school consisted of online classes. This presented the opportunity to ensure everyone remained safe and healthy. Teachers worked exceptionally hard to prepare classes and ensure that students were taking care of their mental wellbeing throughout this time. As technological difficulties materialized, they dealt with them proficiently, while maintaining a sense of routine.

On the other hand, students were grateful that the sports teams were allowed to continue with their seasons, since currently, hockey, curling, and basketball are in progress.

VCI’s curling club consists of two boys’ teams who are looking forward to competing in zones. This competition was postponed, but should be back in action soon, where VCI will wish the best of luck to both of these teams.

In regards to the basketball teams, VCI is proud of the fact that there are four teams hoping to begin their league games soon. This includes Junior-Varsity Girls, Junior-Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys. They have been practicing for the past few weeks, in anticipation of their upcoming season.

The hockey team has been competing against several teams in the Westman area for the past couple months and have been able to secure some victories. With the remaining games, they hope to pull off a few more triumphs and end their season successfully.

The end of January brings the end of the first semester for students here at VCI. With the semester coming to a close, exams bring a set of challenges for both the students and teachers. COVID (namely Omicron) has presented new obstacles that everyone has had to face, namely more people contracting it, thus causing more absenteeism.

As the semester concludes, staff and students can undoubtedly reflect fondly on how challenges have been tackled. VCI is looking forward to what the next semester will bring and is hoping for a sense of ‘normalcy,’ while still maintaining a safe and healthy standard.
