Westlock County declares State of Local Emergency

Emergency
A vehicle drove into a washed-out section of road in Westlock County April 23. The municipality has declared a State of Local Emergency as 15 roads and one bridge have been washed out.

Westlock County declared a State of Local Emergency April 23 due to spring flooding and has closed portions of 15 roads and one bridge.

While river levels may continue to rise over the next few days or weeks, a number of local roads have already been washed out and others are under water, says a release issued by the county just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Chief administrative officer Leo Ludwig said the move is a precautionary measure.

"We make the decision based on the amount of damage that was occurring from overflow," he said. "With the uncertainty of riverflow, we wanted to be prepared if we need to do some emergency measures or evacuations."

He said they’ll assess the situation daily, while the province is prepared to share any resources if needed.

County officials are advising residents to not drive around road barriers, or through water because of hidden risks.

If you see water running over a road report it immediately to the county’s dedicated report line at 780-307-4283, or visit www.westlockcounty.com for more information.
