Evergreen Place By Helen Martens
TREES by Alfred Joyce Kilmer
“I think that I shall never see, A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest, Against the earth's sweet flowing breast.
A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray.
A tree that may in summer wear, A nest of robins in her hair,
Upon whose bosom snow has lain, Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree."

I have been driving around town noticing the many trees and I thought of this poem that I memorized years ago in school. Maybe many of you also had to memorize it. What I did not know was that Joyce Kilmer was a man. Alfred Joyce Kilmer wrote this poem in Feb. 1913. It was first published in "Poetry: A Magazine of Verse" in Aug. 1913. The poem was inspired by a commonplace tree in the author's backyard.

After being in the hospital for many weeks, Verna Pennycook is at home in Evergreen. It is good to see you up and about, even if it is in a wheelchair.
The Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze, Aug. 16 to 21 is a thing of the past. Many of the residents have taken in different events.
Harold and Lynda Spring went to the Show and Shine automobile display. Then on Sunday, Aug. 21, they went to the Demolition Derby where their grandson took part. He came in second in the main event.
The parade came down Hargrave Street, very good for us at Evergreen. Carol Gabrielle, like some others, watched the parade from her window. She asked me to say thank you to Omar Hanson for singing again Mentioning Carol, she also said she enjoyed the resident who whistled when he walked down the hall. When there was no whistle she always wondered if he was alright. So, thankyou to our "whistler", you are cheering many people.
Marlene Balzar will be going to Spruce Bay to spend three days with her sister Leona in Leona's cabin.
Emmi Schneider has a new great-grandson, who is great grand #5. Emmi spent this last Sunday with her son Tom and Tonya Schneider.
Irene Rowand went to her great niece Tracy Tough's wedding at Kenossee Lake last weekend. The reception was at Wawota.
Our condolences to you Irene, at the passing of your oldest sister Alane Kivamaki.
Vern and Margaret Rollo took in the Show and Shine on Thursday night. Then on Sunday they went to Miniota to the Open House at Miniota Museum.
More hot days are coming, so let’s stay cool if we can. Enjoy seeing the trees in our town!
Quote for the Day: "Be like a tree - stay grounded. Connect with your roots. Turn over a new leaf. Bend before you break. Enjoy your unique natural beauty. Keep on growing." -Joanne Rapki
