Several recent Disney type movies came to the Elkhorn Community skating rink with this year’s ice show called “At the Movies”. The rink is always a busy place and it is this day
along with the great canteen food, a silent auction to bid on and fresh presentation flowers to buy as gifts for the many young skaters, who ranged in age from preschoolers to high
school students.

After the playing of Oh Canada the large crowd of parents, grandparents, siblings and friends were treated to a two hour show of colourful costumes and great music for the solo
and group performances.

If there were any mishaps the audience was always forgiving and very encouraging to the group skaters. Them mood of the event was helped by the many movie posters on display
and the smell of fresh hot popcorn, which they ran out of.

During the performances by the youngest skaters, the intermediate members of the club were on hand to guide them around or pick them up when they fell.

There were many fine solo performances, but two that stood out where by Kate McLean and Hannah Martin. The final act was a group performance by the older members called “Pitch
Perfect”, in colourful black and white leotards, spinning around the ice in propeller formations.

The final event of the program was the giving of awards and recognition to outstanding and improved skaters, along with honouring some of the skating coaches.

The only thing missing for this writer were the skating mothers. Jennifer Chant, head of the Elkhorn Figure Skating Club said “Our ice show theme “At the
Movies” had the arena filled with friends and family to support our local skaters. Our acts taken from Despicable Me, Into the Woods, Rio, The Croods, and Pitch Perfect made all our
skaters a box office hit.”

She added, “As with any successful event, it takes a great deal of behind the scenes organizing and we appreciate the many volunteers who helped.”

Chant was also very proud of the skaters for their efforts and achievements on reaching many personal bests throughout the year.

One of the special awards of recognition was given to Hanna Martin for her triple gold achievement with Skate Canada. Martin has received the national gold standing in dance, figure skating and in
skills.
