Virden’s Amy Lewis and Quincy Flecknor are excited to compete in the 2016 Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games - together.

“She is one of my best friends and I'm so happy that we can have this great experience together,” Lewis wrote in an Internet interview. “Plus, she's a great person to have laughs with for the 45-minute drive to practice in Brandon.”

Flecknor and Lewis, who are Grade 9 students, are teammates on the Team Manitoba volleyball squad. They are part of the area’s contingent in phase two of the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games, which run Aug. 11-13 in Steinbach.

“I am really looking forward to the Summer Games and playing against some top players from all over Manitoba,” Flecknor wrote in an email interview. “We have been practicing hard and are really playing together well as a team. It will be a great experience that I am excited to be a part of.”

Like Flecknor, Lewis has enjoyed being a part of the team.

“We all quickly bonded as a team so well. Also, I have a feeling that we will be one of the top teams in the games this year judging by how hard we all have practiced and how badly we all want to come out on top,” Lewis wrote.

She is the daughter of Jason and Colleen Lewis. Lewis appreciates the support of her family.

“They have been there for me since day one and they push me to be the best I can be. My mom knows the game so well and she is the one who has helped me get to this point in my volleyball career.”

Flecknor also has the full backing of her family. Her parents are Marcie and Corey Flecknor.

“My parents have always been there to support me. Whether it is taking me to practices, driving all over for tournaments and games or just practicing in the backyard with me, they are always encouraging me to keep going and try harder.”

Brooklyn Roach

Virden’s Brooklyn Roach is competing for Team Westman in softball at the Summer Games.

“I am looking forward to playing teams from different regions, and to staying at the school with my team and being together as a team the whole time,” wrote Roach, who is going into Grade 11, in an email interview.

She is thankful for the support of her family. Roach appreciates the backing of her parents Doug and Nicky Roach and the encouragement of her older sister Mackenzie, an accomplished softball player who will suit up for the University of Regina this fall.

“My dad supports me a lot by taking me to my games and practices, practicing with me in the bac yard and ball diamonds during the summer and in the gym during the winter. He has spent a lot of time helping me, and he always pushes me to do my best. Without him I definitely would not be where I am today. My mom and sister (Mackenzie) support me by always being there to cheer me on.”

Other Participants

Roach is joined on the Team Westman softball team by Monet Mazawasicuna of the Oak Lake and Sioux Valley area. Virden’s Drew Cochrane, a University of Manitoba swimmer, is serving as a coach for the regional swim squad. Virden’s Carly Hayward is Team Westman’s regional manager. Other area athletes and coaches participated in phase one of the Games.
