It has been quite the summer for barrel racer Angela Tapp.

The former Virden resident recently dominated the Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association provincial finals in Moose Jaw. The daughter of Philip Tapp and Linda Rogalsky-Tapp swept all three go rounds at the finals. This performance netted her the SBRA 1D finals championship, three other awards, a saddle, three saddle pads, and just over $3,300. As well, the Regina resident has succeeded in her first season of Canadian Cowboy Association rodeos.

“(I’m) most pleased with how my hard work of training and seasoning my horse has finally resulted in more consistent, smooth and fast runs,” Tapp said of her season so far.

She has worked with her horse, “EM” – registered name SR Leading Fast Chic, for six years. Tapp purchased the running bred American Quarter Horse Association gelding as a four-year-old.

In Moose Jaw, Tapp did more than just win the 1D open – the highest division - in the SBRA finals. She also was the High Point champion, earned the Consistency Award, and was the 1D Average winner. Prior to the finals, this team won several barrel racings or placed in the top 10 of 1D at big money added events. Another highlight was that Tapp was the first day winner out of 200 runs at the big Carnduff Dash for Cash event and was second in the second go-around, earning the average 1D reserve champion honour.

“My success is from my barrel racing friends over the years who have given me help and/or support, my coaching from Taylor Douglas at Yellow Grass (Sask.), lots of practicing and being dedicated to making the best and fastest controlled runs on my horse, as well as my family support. Most importantly, my trust and faith in God for safety and success,” Tapp said.

A registered nurse working normally in a neonatal intensive care unit, Tapp took on a temporary position in pediatric home care nursing. In this position, she has weekends off so the opportunity to compete in rodeos opened up.

“Also, my horse was doing really well this year and I thought it would be a good opportunity with a shorter CCA season due to COVID to try and see how we would do, competing at a different level,” Tapp said. “Also, I had some friends who barrel race encourage me to buy my CCA membership.”

That membership has certainly paid off. The team of Tapp and EM, along with her faithful five-year-old dog companion, Luci, has placed second at two rodeos and seventh at one. As of Monday, she sat in the top 10, which would qualify her for the CCA finals. There are two rodeos left.
