The Virden Bears curling team became the last of VCI’s athletic teams to make a run for a provincial championship this school year.

The team of Jace Freeman, Leif Wilson, Rhett Grieve, Wyatt Bradding and Tanner Rowan were coached by Mark Robertson.

The boys advanced to provincials by winning the Zone 9 championship that was held in Virden earlier this year.

This year’s provincial championship was hosted by Ecole Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour.

Their first game in the bonspiel was against the Oak Park Raiders and it proved to be a tough one. A loss in this game bumped them out of the A-side.

The boys fared better in the next two games, winning against the Margaret Barbour Spartans from The Pas and the Dauphin Clippers. Their playoff run ended with a loss to the Calvin Christian Eagles.

From Winnipeg, the Olympiens from College Jeanne-Sauve won the provincial title.

The Bears are to be congratulated.

As Chad Falk, Executive Director of the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association said: “Any athlete who has attained this level of competition while representing one's school deserves credit for his or her own personal victory.”
