Oak Lake product Brian Elder has been named head scout for the Virden Oil Capitals. “The organization is happy to have Brian come on board as our head scout,” Jamie Hodson, Director of Business and Hockey Operations, stated on the team's website.

Virden’s Taylor Laffin proved she is one of the country’s best with a bow and arrow. The daughter of Danette and Leon Laffin finished fourth at the Canadian Archery Championships Aug. 3-6 in Truro, N.S.

Three local baseball players and coach helped the Oildome 13U team compete against the best in Western Canada this past weekend.

A Virden Collegiate Institute graduate enjoyed a successful second season at Dartmouth College. Sydney Hill, who grew up in Redvers, Sask. recorded a career-high two goals and three points last winter.

Congratulations to the AAA 13U PeeWee Oildome team as they have really pulled together and are ready to take on the rest of Canada at the Westerns. All events will be at the Simplot Millennium Park in Brandon, Man. Aug. 16-19.

Pure magic on the ball diamond

The Elkhorn Expoettes bring together a number of area women who played high school fastball together. The team competes in the 11-team Westman Ladies Fastball League. The Expoettes continue league play this week.

Oak Lake’s KJ Wallace had a successful third season for the St. Norbert College women’s hockey team. “KJ is extremely coachable and is always learning,” St. Norbert head coach Meredith A. Roth said.

Virden’s Landon Peel believes the near future looks bright for his University of Regina men’s hockey team. “We have struggled for the three years I have been here,” the son of Brian and Joan Peel said.
